Not every Instagram interaction starts as a DM. Automations let you respond to public activity — comments and story mentions — and pull it into a private conversation.
Comment Automations
When someone comments on your post, RateUp can reply automatically.
Click Create automation in the Comment Automations section.
Set the trigger — the keyword or phrase in a comment that fires it.
Choose the response. A private reply moves the conversation into DMs, where you can answer properly.
Save and Sync with Meta.
Private Replies
A private reply turns a public comment into a DM thread. This is the pattern behind "comment PRICE and we'll send you the details" — the comment is public marketing, the answer is a private conversation you can actually work in.
Instagram limits when a private reply may be sent after a comment. If replies stop going out, the window has usually closed rather than the automation being broken.
Story Mention Automations
When someone mentions your account in their story, RateUp can respond automatically.
Customers who tag you in a story are your best advocates and the easiest to lose — they get no acknowledgement unless someone happens to see it. An automatic thank-you closes that gap.
Create an automation in the Story Mention Automations section.
Write the response — a thank-you, an offer, or a route into a chatbot.

Keeping Automations Honest
- Reply as a person would, not as a form
- Keep the automatic part short and hand over quickly
- Do not automate a reply to a complaint — route those to a human immediately
- Re-read your automations occasionally; wording that felt clever six months ago rarely still does
