WhatsApp Templates
WhatsApp Templates are pre-approved message formats used to send notifications, marketing messages, and automated communications to users. Templates ensure messages comply with WhatsApp policies and can be reused across flows, broadcasts, and automations.
Accessing Templates
Templates are managed from WhatsApp → Templates.
This page lists all templates created under the connected WhatsApp account.
Templates Dashboard Overview
The Templates dashboard displays templates as individual cards.
Each template card shows:
- Template name
- Created time
- Approval status
- Template category and type
- Delete option (if applicable)
This view helps teams quickly locate and manage existing templates.
Top Action Buttons
At the top of the Templates page, you will find three quick actions.
Documentation (Book Icon)
- Opens WhatsApp Templates documentation.
- Use this to review template rules, formats, and limitations.
Start a Tour (Info Icon)
- Launches a guided walkthrough of the Templates interface.
- Useful for first-time users.
Refresh / Sync (Refresh Icon)
- Syncs templates with WhatsApp (Meta).
- Use this after submitting a template or when approval status is not updated.
Sorting Templates
Templates can be sorted using the Sort By dropdown.
Available options:
- Latest First – Newest templates appear first
- Old First – Oldest templates appear first
- A – Z – Alphabetical order
- Z – A – Reverse alphabetical order
Sorting helps when managing a large number of templates.
Creating a New Template
To create a new WhatsApp template:
- Click Create Templates +
- The Create Template screen opens
Template Basic Details
Fill in the required template information.
Template Name
- Unique identifier for the template
- Used internally and during message sending
- Lowercase names with underscores are recommended
Template Type
- Defines how the message will be used
- Example:
GENERAL_NOTIFICATION
Category
- Determines WhatsApp policy classification
- Common options:
- UTILITY
- MARKETING
Language
- Select the language of the message content
Adding a Broadcast Header
The broadcast header appears at the top of the WhatsApp message.
Supported header types:
- IMAGE
- VIDEO
- TEXT
Click Update Image (or upload) to attach media when using image or video headers.
Writing the Message Body
The body contains the main message content.
You can:
- Write formatted text (bold, italic, strikethrough)
- Insert emojis
- Add variables for personalization
Character limits are shown below the editor.
Adding a Footer (Optional)
The footer is displayed at the bottom of the message.
Common footer usage:
- Disclaimers
- Brand attribution
- Short notes
Adding Action Buttons (Optional)
Buttons allow users to take action directly from the message.
To add a button:
- Click Add Action Button
- Choose the action type (for example: Visit a Website)
- Enter button text
- Provide the destination URL
If more than three buttons are added, they are displayed as a list.
Previewing the Template
A live WhatsApp preview is shown on the right side.
The preview updates automatically as you edit:
- Header
- Body
- Footer
- Buttons
This helps verify how the message will appear to users.
Saving and Submitting Templates
At the top-right of the screen:
- Save as Draft
- Saves the template without submitting for approval
- Save & Submit
- Submits the template to WhatsApp for review
Once submitted, the template status updates after approval.
Template Statuses
Templates can have different statuses:
- Draft – Not submitted
- Pending – Under review
- Approved – Ready to use
- Rejected – Requires changes
Status is visible on the template card in the dashboard.

- Chatbots
- Notifications

- Use clear and descriptive template names
- Keep message content concise
- Avoid promotional content in utility templates
